Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

We belong to the Division of Renal Medicine at the Department for Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology. Our research profile is translational where we are utilizing both preclinical and clinical investigations to increase our understanding of why and how chronic kidney disease develops and proceeds towards kidney failure, and how we can ameliorate cardiovascular and cerebral complications under the uremic environment and apply novel screening technologies and therapeutics. We include several experimental set-ups both related to in vivo and ex vivo investigations to assess “Early vascular ageing phenotype” under uremia and identity novel therapeutic targets. The ongoing research is in close collaborations with clinical researchers at hospital site. The laboratory facilities reside in Neo at Campus Flemingsberg, a biomedical research building, that provides a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of scientific areas of interest across disciplines for mutual collaborations.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

As a doctoral student you will be involved in a project investigating different aspects of how and why chronic disease develops and is associated with several cardiovascular complications. The project includes epidemiological and experimental studies using both in vivo and ex vivo techniques to assess cardiovascular malfunctions and pathogenetic mechanisms involved, which could later be potentially targeted by novel therapeutics. As a doctoral student, you will carry out several different types of studies that will be associated with novel biomarkers and mechanisms, as well as screening of novel therapeutical agents. The overall goal of the research project is to better characterize the disease process and identify effective screening and treatment methods.
