Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Social medicine, Infectious Diseases and Migration research group studies social determinants and consequences of disease, evaluates interventions to improve health care access and equity, assesses the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of screening programmes and determines health needs of migrants. The research group has several research projects focusing on ending tuberculosis (TB) as a public health problem through integrated, patient-centred care and prevention.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

You will be part of an interdisciplinary research project studying transmission of M. tuberculosis and establishing the clinical utility of a new electrostatic air-sampling device. You will establish the diagnostic performance of the air sampler in a controlled laboratory setting and in a purpose-built patient sampling chamber. You will study the association between the detection of aerosolized M. tuberculosis with this new technology in patients with active TB and household transmission of TB.

The research project will be carried out within a consortium in Sweden (Department of Global Public Health [GPH], KI, Department of Microbiology, Tumour and Cell Biology [MTC], KI and Karolinska University Hospital), South Africa (the University of Stellenbosch) and Mozambique (Manhiça Health Research Centre). You will conduct the initial steps of the project in a laboratory at MTC where the electrostatic air sampler has been developed. Later, you will implement different research components in Sweden, South Africa and Mozambique.

You will also contribute to the management of the secretariat of KI´s Centre for Tuberculosis Research. Moreover, you will assist in the regular activities of the research group, including teaching and supervision of students.
