To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The Department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: cardiovascular medicine, allergy, and inflammatory diseases.

The current position is advertised by the Division of Cardiology at the Department of Medicine Solna, and more specifically by the heart failure research group which has extensive experience in performing registry-based and clinical research. The research group has well-established ongoing international connections and partners in scientific societies.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The selected PhD student will contribute conceptually as well as methodologically to several registry-based research studies exploring several topics related with the implementation  of guideline-directed medical therapies in daily clinical practice under the supervision of the supervisors Assoc. Professor Gianluigi Savarese, Prof Lars Lund and Dr. Giulia Ferrannini.

The PhD student, supported by the supervisors, will prepare the study protocols and perform all the statistical analysis, draft the manuscripts and perform necessary revisions. Moreover, a plan for participation in doctoral courses and credited activities will be done with the supervisors, to make sure that all deadlines are met and necessary credits are obtained. The PhD student is expected to participate in regular group meetings to actively discuss their and others´ projects. The participation in international conferences with presentation of own work is also among expected duties. The Candidate will perform some teaching activities to medical students.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent. Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with an interest in registry-based research. It is of high value that the candidate has good collaboration and communication skills.

Further merits are:

- Previous knowledge about registry-based research and statistical methods

- Medical specialisation in cardiology and/or internal medicine 

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.
