Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The research at the Unit of Epidemiology within the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is focused on advancing knowledge about disease etiology and prognosis, and methodological development and stringency. The research is based on large register-based cohorts, as well as cohorts and case-control studies with extensive information from questionnaires and biological samples. The supervision team will consist of the principal supervisor, Anthony Matthews (IMM), and three co-supervisors: Miguel Hernán (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health/IMM), Anita Berglund (IMM), and Bertil Lindahl (Uppsala University). The student will also be part of a wider group of researchers working primarily within casual inference using Swedish register data.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The doctoral student project will be in the areas of epidemiology and causal inference. The general aim will be to understand how we effectively benchmark observational studies against randomized trials that ask the similar questions, with the wider goal of using these observational data to complement inferences made in trials. The project will consist of two broad parts: a methodological part, that aims to understand why differences in results may occur between observational studies and trials; and an applied part, which will use the target trial framework to design an observational study on the comparative effect of two treatments used in patients with acute coronary syndrome, that will then be benchmarked against the results of a trial that asks a similar question. The student will be expected to contribute towards study design, carry out analyses, and interpret results, as well as engaging in group meetings, departmental seminars, and relevant national and international meetings.
