To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The Department of Oncology-Pathology is searching for a PhD student to work with Dr Ola Larsson to study how mRNA translation is regulated by tissue composition in cancer. Researchers in the Larson lab use transcriptome-wide approaches to understand how mRNA translation is regulated by e.g. cis-regulatory mRNA elements and translation initiation factors in concert with signaling pathways. An overarching goal is to identify future treatment avenues in cancer via targeting mRNA translation. The group consists of both PhD students and post-docs that are studying mRNA translation using molecular biology and/or computational biology approaches. The mix of both wet and dry lab expertise creates a highly creative environment that is ideal for fostering the next generation of researchers with abilities to generate and/or analyze complex large scale data sets; and interpreting these in biological contexts.
The doctoral student will use newly developed large-scale approaches and algorithms to study how a repertoire of mechanisms determine patterns of mRNA translation in cancer depending on tissue composition. Many of the data sets will be generated in close collaboration with Staffan Strömblad (KI), who is an expert in mechanotransduction. The importance of the identified mechanisms for cancer phenotypes can then be evaluated and patient subgroups showing alterations in these mechanisms can be identified. These studies may thereby enable precision medicine approaches for cancer treatment.
