Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

Our research group, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, includes senior and junior researchers, biostatisticians, administrator, PhD candidates and students. We conduct research examining diseases and surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract, i.e. the oesophagus and stomach, with a focus on cancer. We have a structured approach to developing new studies, and run regular research seminars, journal clubs, methods clubs and PhD courses. In the last external assessment of all research constellations at KI, our group was rated ‘Outstanding’ in cancer research, i.e. the highest score possible. The group leader is Jesper Lagergren, professor and consultant of surgery and member of the Nobel Assembly at KI. He is also and professor and consultant surgeon on a part-time basis at King’s College London.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We seek a PhD student for a research project examining how treatment of the gastric bacteria Helicobacter pylori influences the risk of gastrointestinal cancer. Methodologically, the project has a clinical epidemiological profile, and is based on a large cohort of patients who have undergone treatment Helicobacter pylori in any of the five Nordic countries. The data are retrieved from health data registries in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, where well-established national registries for medication, cancer, diagnoses, surgical procedures and mortality are available.
PhD studies correspond to 4 years’ full-time work and include scientific work, postgraduate courses, seminars and international conferences. The PhD student will contribute to data collection, draft study protocols, do literature reviews, conduct data management and statistical analyses, and draft scientific manuscripts.

Supervision

Main supervisor is Jesper Lagergren, Professor and Consultant of Surgery. Co-supervisor is Giola Santoni, biostatistician.
