Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Cancer Therapy Group lead by Prof. Oscar Fernández-Capetillo is integrated at the "Genome Biology" Division, together with other competitive groups that work in areas such as DNA repair, epigenetics, advanced imaging or next generation genomics and is located at SciLifeLab, Solna.

Research in the group focuses on phenotypic screenings aiming to find genes or chemicals that can be of help in fighting against age-related diseases currently lacking a cure. This approach allows the identification of biologically relevant molecules at physiological conditions, and the current projects involve exploiting replication stress as anti-cancer strategy, cancer immunotherapy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. At SciLifeLab, our team is surrounded by other world leaders in various biomedical research areas, and has access to national facilities for proteomics, microscopy, next generation sequencing, chemical biology, drug discovery and development, among others.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We are currently looking for a PhD student to join our team. The student will be responsible for his / her own project and should be able to work well within a team of research group members and collaborators. The student should, with the guidance from the supervisor(s), be able to plan and perform experiments, analyse results, write scientific articles, and present results at scientific meetings.

The project is aimed to define identify new mechanisms of resistance to cancer therapies including immunotherapy, as well as novel mutations and/or biomarkers that can predict the sensitivity to these therapies. To this end, we will combine genetic and chemical screens, which will be followed by cellular and molecular biology experiments aiming to understand the mechanistic basis of our discoveries. Ultimately, the projects main aim is to better identify the patients that are going to benefit the most from various cancer therapies as well as to improve their efficacy.
