The Stagkourakis Lab at Karolinska Institutet and SciLifeLab in Stockholm is recruiting for a PhD student position in bioimaging. We are based at the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet and are part of SciLifeLab, Sweden’s national center for large-scale biosciences and data-driven life science. Our mission is to uncover the neural and neurohormonal mechanisms underlying instinctual and homeostatic behaviors, including aggression, fear, food, and water intake.

We seek a motivated doctoral student who will contribute to the development and application of advanced imaging-based approaches to study neural circuit function, spanning cellular to population-level dynamics.

About the Lab

The Stagkourakis Lab integrates imaging (two-photon and miniscope), large-scale electrophysiology, genetic and viral circuit tools, and rigorous behavioral paradigms. A strong emphasis is placed on quantitative analysis, experimental reproducibility, and conceptual clarity. The lab is embedded in a highly collaborative environment across Karolinska Institutet and SciLifeLab.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with prior experience in neuroimaging, and ideally in two photon imaging, who is curious, analytically minded, and eager to combine experimental work with quantitative analysis to address fundamental questions about brain function.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. (A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

Qualifications

• A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Neuroscience, Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
• Stereotaxic surgery and FELASA-B training.
• Strong interest in experimental neuroscience and imaging-based approaches.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
• Good communication skills in English (written and spoken).

Desirable skills (one or more of the following):

• Experience with optical imaging methods (e.g. two-photon microscopy, calcium imaging).
• Background in quantitative data analysis or programming (e.g. Python, MATLAB).
• Experience with image analysis, signal processing, or computational methods.
• Familiarity with experimental work in animal models (rodents).
• Interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of biology, physics, and computation.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
