To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The research group

The PhD student will join a multidisciplinary research group led by Principal Researcher Zheng Chang. His group conducts research is in the field of psychiatric epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology, using large-scale population data (e.g., national health registers). The student will be involved in an extended “psychiatry-epidemiology” research group at MEB, where we will hold weekly meetings including student presentations, journal clubs, and external seminars. Moreover, our collaborators at the University of Gothenburg will bring additional supports and opportunities for the PhD student. We also have collaborations with several other research groups at KI, clinical units in Sweden, and international leading researchers in the research area.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The successful applicant will work on projects related to pharmacological treatment in forensic psychiatry. The project will leverage advanced epidemiologic designs and high-quality Swedish registry data. The results are expected to provide critical information for health care providers about the risks and benefits associated with different pharmacological treatment, in order to improve treatment outcomes of patients in forensic psychiatric care.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

The ideal candidate should hold a master’s degree in epidemiology. Previous experience in epidemiological research is highly valued. Experience in pharmacoepidemiology and the use of forensic psychiatry quality register data is considered especially meritorious. Demonstrable advanced skills and expertise in statistics and programming (Stata, R or similar languages) are essential. The candidate needs good skills in English, both written and spoken. Swedish skills are considered a merit. Previous clinical/other experience in working with individuals involved with the criminal justice system is considered an asset.

We attach great importance to personal qualities in this recruitment. As a person, you are social and able to interact and contribute within a team. In addition, we expect the doctoral student to take an active role in the project and be willing and able to work independently.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
