To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

You will be part of the unit for cervical cancer elimination at the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology at Karolinska Institutet. We aim to understand risk factors and prognostic indicators for, and prevent various human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers. We also study the role of other microorganisms in the development of cancer. We use various tools to study this, including population and health registries, large-scale cohorts and databases, randomized intervention studies and various biobanks, as well as mathematical modelling. We use advanced epidemiology and modeling combined with basic research ideas and molecular studies.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We are looking for a PhD student who will study the role of microorganisms in the development of cancer. By using databases with sequencing data from tumors, the presence of already known but also unknown microorganisms that may be associated with cancer can be identified. Using machine learning (ML), the PhD student will then create models that can extract microbial characteristics that have the potential to predict the onset of different types of cancer.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for someone with a MSc in bioinformatics and who have worked with metagenomics, programming and machine learning (ML). You must master Python, SQL, R-RStudio and cluster computing. You must be able to work independently with projects under supervision. You are meticulous, quality-oriented and have good cooperation skills. Fluency in spoken and written English is also a requirement.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
