The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The research program at the Division of Nursing strives to be a global leader in nursing research, contribute to evidence-based guidelines and health care practice, and support the development of nursing to shape the future of healthcare context. There are five research groups at the Division in which Perioperative Care is one of them and where this doctoral project is included. The research group covers development and testing of instruments, health economy, health literacy, quality of life, postoperative symptoms, and recovery. Different research methods are used in order capture the research question. The goal is finding innovative solutions and evidence-based knowledge to be implemented in clinical practice to increase the quality of patient's postoperative recovery.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The doctoral student will be admitted to the Research school in Health Science (FiH)

This doctoral project is part of a larger research program that aims to investigate postoperative cognitive recovery. The overall aim of this of doctoral projects is to evaluate the effect of cognitive monitoring and support on patient's postoperative recovery. The monitoring will be conducted by digital cognitive screening in order to identify postoperative cognitive decline. The project also includes to test the usability and feasibility of this digital cognitive screening tool and to study health economy aspects as well as to describe patients’ experience of the cognitive monitoring and support.

The project is designed to give the doctoral student broad knowledge and experience of various research methods as both quantitative, qualitative and health economic methods will be used. The doctoral student will participate in the planning of the studies and under supervision conduct the data collection, analysis, and manuscript drafting. The doctoral student will take courses and present abstracts at national and international conferences as well as participate in various research seminars.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

The ideal candidate for this doctoral position is a nurse with specialist education in anesthetic care as well as work experience in anesthetic care or postoperative care. Great communication skills in English and Swedish (oral and written) are a requirement as the doctoral student will work with data collection, interact with clinicians, researchers, and participants in studies within the doctoral student project.

We are looking for a candidate who is driven, motivated, takes initiative and can work independently.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
