Doctoral (PhD) student position in single-cell genomics

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

A doctoral student position is available in the lab of Rickard Sandberg at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB). The lab is located in Biomedicum, a top-notch research building with a modern infrastructure and equipment. Rickard’s lab has focused on developing single-cell technologies to study transcriptional regulation and more recently expanded into post-transcriptional regulation. The lab is equally well represented by experimental and computational researchers, and we carry out all aspects of projects within the lab and also with collaborations. We have developed a unique automated robotic lab for high-capacity full-length scRNA-seq to generate splicing-informative single-cell RNA-seq data across complex tissues. Additionally, the RNA-seq based technology developed in the lab is being increasingly tailored for diagnostic applications, including early detection of disease.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

Doctoral students will participate in a research project that explores whether it is possible to develop an RNA‑sequencing method that retains the advantageous properties of plate‑based techniques while being able to analyze hundreds of thousands of cells in parallel within emulsions. The student will have access to a well-equipped molecular biology lab, devices for droplet/capsule generation and will be in charge of leading the experimental exploration as well as the computational analysis of generated data. A successful method implementation would become a foundation for multiple lab projects, spanning analyses of cell-type regulated alternative splicing in the brain and be adapted for diagnostic applications.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

To be eligible for this position, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

• Masters degree in biomedicine, molecular biology, engineering, computer science (or similar)
• Fluency in English
• Excellent personal and communication skills

Moreover, skills in the following areas would be meriting:

• Experimental skills in droplet/capsule chemistry and single-cell sequencing methodology
• Computational skills involving python, git, and other programming languages

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.
