To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The Smed Sörensen lab is an international research group that does translational immunology on respiratory inflammatory diseases and respiratory viral infections including influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2. We have attracted funding for our research from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
This doctoral research project is focused on using experimental and computational analyses to understand immune responses and disease development in respiratory viral infections. We do longitudinal sampling of respiratory virus infected patients and investigate differences in immune responses over time and across disease severity and relate to clinical outcomes. Patient inclusion and sampling, sample processing, experimental immunological and computational analyses are central duties of the doctoral student in this project. In addition to the doctoral research project, the doctoral student is expected to help with common tasks of the laboratory as well as actively participate in seminars and journal clubs.
