Department of Laboratory Medicine Huddinge/Division of Pathology (LABMED) consists of 7 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic, translational, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.


The research group

The research group is a part of the Division of Pathology at the Karolinska Institutet South Campus. The student will work under the supervision of Dr. Dhifaf Sarhan who is the research group leader. Her broad research focus is tumor immunology and immunotherapy to target the tumor microenvironment, and cell therapy. The position is based at Ana Futura at Karolinska Institutet, but work will also be performed in collaborative laboratories of Professors Cecilia Söderber-Naucler and Andane Achour at BioClinicum at the Karolinska University Hospital and the SciLife Laboratories. We have access to new world class unique infrastructure for developing new therapeutic strategies and studying the efficacy and safety of such novel treatments in a translational setting and later in clinical trials.


The doctoral student project

The overall aim of this project is to study a unique subset of Natural Killer (NK) cells with immunological memory including the molecular signature associated with memory formation, antigen recognition strategies, in cytomegalovirus infection and CMV-related tumors.


The doctoral student is going to work with already collected data for some previous studies. The student will participate in the design and execution of the experimental research, perform the statistical analysis, communicate the results in oral and written form. The student will be responsible for drafting the manuscripts that will be derived from the project.


Eligibility requirements and qualifications of applicant

We are looking for an ambitious student with strong enthusiasm towards science, with well communicating skills in English, to complement our interdisciplinary team. The successful applicant has completed a master’s degree in translational medicine, (bio)medicine or equivalent and strong background in immunology or tumor immunology. Preferably, the applicant should also have experience working with CMV, cell/tissue processing techniques, Immunological assays (ELISA, NK or T cell assays), PCR assay, flow cytometry analysis. Experience in seahorse analysis is also meritorious but not required.


During the selection process, analytical skills, ability to think critically and independently, as well as laboratory experience for project related tasks and personal qualities will be evaluated. Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship (Sw: "doktorandanställning") maximum 4 years full-time. The salary is partly financed by the internal framework funding agreement KID."
