To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

We are seeking an ambitious and skilled doctoral student to join the Centre for Pharmacoepidemiology (CPE) at the Department of Medicine, Solna, KI. CPE was established in 2005 and has become a dynamic research environment at the intersection of academia, healthcare, regulatory authorities, and the pharmaceutical industry. CPE is one of the largest academic pharmacoepidemiology centres in Europe, with active Nordic, European, and international collaborations. We are about 20 employees and a number of affiliated researchers, including epidemiologist, clinicians, statisticians, project coordinators, postdoctoral researchers, and doctoral students. Under the main supervision of Carolyn Cesta, Ph.D., the doctoral student will receive high quality doctoral education and research experience within the fields of reproductive/perinatal pharmacoepidemiology. CPE has decades of experience in these research areas is involved in several national, Nordic, and international studies focusing on medication use during pregnancy and the benefits and consequences for mother and child.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The doctoral project will focus on pharmacoepidemiological methods to evaluate medication use in reproductive-aged and pregnant women, and maternal and infant health consequences using linked data from the Swedish national health and population registers. The student will be involved in all parts of the project, ranging from contributing to the study protocol and study design, management of data from large population-based registers, statistical data analysis, writing scientific publications, and disseminating the results. The doctoral student is expected to participate in activities related to research at CPE and in educational activities offered in the Clinical Epidemiology Division (KEP) and Karolinska Institutet.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent. (A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

The successful applicant will be self-motivated, have excellent written and oral communications skills, and be able to work independently and within a team. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in public/reproductive health and clinical experience with pregnant women (e.g., midwifery, obstetrics). Part-time doctoral work is possible.

Requirements:

  • A degree in public health, epidemiology, midwifery, or similar field
  • Experience with project management, writing research protocol, ethical applications, and Swedish register data orders
  • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written scientific English

Merits:

  • Experience interpreting results from epidemiologic studies and/or using statistical software
  • Experience in research in the field of epidemiology or pharmacoepidemiology
  • Strong interest and track record in the field of women’s and maternal health
  • Comprehension of Swedish or one of the other Scandinavian languages

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups.
