To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
Professor Anna Nilsson, research group leader, is an expert in pediatric oncology and works both as a professor and a clinical pediatric oncologist. She leads her research group at the Department of Pediatric Oncology and Pediatric Surgery. Her research focuses on addressing clinical issues related to infections and immunosuppression in children with cancer, with the aim of improving the health of this vulnerable patient group. The research group has established collaborations within Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, as well as with other leading universities in Sweden.
The current project focuses on adaptive immunity in children with cancer, which is known to be affected during treatment. This impacts the immune system's ability to fight infections as well as the response to vaccines. We have identified several knowledge gaps that will be addressed in this PhD project:
The PhD student is expected, under supervision, to plan, perform, analyze, and summarize the results of experiments aimed at answering these questions. The work will be carried out at Biomedicum, Karolinska Institutet, where the student will have both office and laboratory space. The PhD student is also expected to stay up to date with the literature, present articles at group meetings, and participate in the department's seminar series. During the PhD period, the student is expected to present their own data at national and international conferences.
A creative and inspiring environment full of expertise and curiosity. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities.
