To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The Meletis Laboratory in the Department of Neuroscience is focused on the investigation of the organization and function of circuits and neurons that regulate motivated behaviors and decision-making, including the mechanisms underlying dysfunction in mouse models of stress or mood disorders. The Meletis Laboratory is part of an outstanding scientific environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure and with many opportunities for international collaborations and interdisciplinary training.
The Meletis Laboratory at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm has an open position for a doctoral student, with the aim to use new technologies to understand the complexity of cell types and circuits in the mammalian nervous system in health and disease.
The project will combine single-cell RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, optogenetics, genetically modified viruses, and other platforms to define the molecular organization of brain circuits, the identity of neuron subtypes, and how neuronal diversity helps explain connectivity and functional complexity. The aim is to define cell-type specific connectivity with state-of-the-art approaches that include molecular profiling of neuron subtypes and connectivity at large scale using barcoded viruses.
The candidate must have experience using molecular methods to define cell types, for example single- cell RNA sequencing or spatial transcriptomics, and a strong analytical and statistical background. Strong background in neuroscience is an advantage. The candidate must have excellent communications skills and the ability to work productively in an interdiciplinary team. Fluency in English is a requirement.
