To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The aging research group at MEB is involved in a wide variety of research projects, including molecular and genetic epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, as well as twin and family studies. The group contains about 20 people - from senior professor to PhD- and master students - with seven different PI´s collaborating on many research topics within aging. Research interests are cardio-metabolic health, biological aging, dementia, frailty, polypharmacy in the old and many more. For more information please contact Ida Karlsson, see information below.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The doctoral project aims at studying how adiposity influences the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, going beyond studying body mass index by also considering e.g. genetic predisposition and metabolic health. Different epidemiological and genetic methods will be applied to examine potential mediators and confounding factors. We use large epidemiological data from the Interplay of Genes and Environment across Multiple Studies (IGEMS) consortium, including the Swedish Twin Registry, and from the Health and Retirement Study. In addition to work with the doctoral project, (including study design, data cleaning and analysis, and drafting manuscripts), the PhD student will also attend relevant courses and present the project at international conferences.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. (A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

• The applicant should have a master’s degree in public health sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, or related discipline, and have a strong interest in cardio-metabolic health and aging
• The applicant should have at least some experience in data management and statistical analyses
• Experience with epidemiological or genetic research is a strong merit, as is experience in research in the field of cardio-metabolic health and aging
• Experience and skills in scientific writing is meriting
• Programming skills in STATA or R is considered a strong merit
• Fluency in written and spoken English is required
• The applicant should be able to work well in a team, as well as having the ability to work independently

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.
