Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The doctoral student will be part of the group for Endocrine Surgery at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery. The research group consists of research-oriented clinically active doctors where the doctoral student will be introduced to the treatment of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and participate in regular clinically oriented meetings. The doctoral student will also be affiliated with the group for Integrative Physiology and have access to a laboratory for the experimental parts of the project. The group for Integrative Physiology is led by Professor Juleen Zierath and consists of about 25 people with different backgrounds and expertise. In the established lab environment, the doctoral student will quickly be able to learn new techniques and become proficient.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The project aims to explore the mechanisms through which PTH affects skeletal muscle function, regeneration, and metabolism to increase knowledge about how PTH and PTHrh stimulation of PTH receptors may be involved in muscle wasting. The ultimate goal of the project is to better identify patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) who will benefit from parathyroid surgery. We also hope to enhance the understanding of the interaction between parathyroid hormone, calcium, and fundamental intracellular processes in skeletal muscle.
