Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

Our research aims to understand how alterations in the human white adipose tissue cellular landscape and microarchitecture are related to common metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. We are particularly interested in the role of adipocytes and their link to disturbed tissue function. Our group consists of 10-15 members (M.D.s, postdoctoral fellows, senior researchers, and technical staff) and has all the necessary infrastructure to conduct translational research including a fully equipped preclinical laboratory at NEO and a clinical research unit at the Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious PhD student to join the research group of Drs. Mikael Rydén and Niklas Mejhert at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. Our aim is to map how molecular circuits control adipocyte function and thereby influence disease progression. The studies are based on systems biology approaches where new tools need to be tailored to capture adipocyte biology. The work will be carried out in the Rydén and Mejhert laboratory in the NEO research building at Karolinska Institutet Campus Flemingsberg.

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

Follow the instructions on the web page Entry requirements (eligibility) for doctoral education.

*If you claim equivalent knowledge, follow the instructions on the web page Assessing equivalent knowledge for general eligibility for doctoral education.

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Follow the instructions on the web page English language requirements for doctoral education.

Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

We will prioritize applicants with a strong background in systems biology and cell biology. The applicant’s bioinformatic skills should include knowledge in common programming languages such as R and Python as well as operative systems such as Linux. It is a clear strength if the applicant has experience in analyzing large genomic datasets and knows how to differentiate adipocytes from stem cells in vitro.  Good knowledge in English, written and spoken, is a requirement. As our group works in an open and non-hierarchical organization, it is important to also have collaborative and communicative skills.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
