To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The division of Clinical Geriatrics at the department of Neurobiology, Care sciences and society, KI is dedicated to research on neurodegenerative disorders, with a special focus on dementia diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. The division drives multiple lines of research using clinical research, imaging research, computerized methods, and epidemiological research based on quality registries. Our work has a close clinical connection with the Memory Clinic at the Karolinska University Hospital and multidisciplinary work that includes research in the fields of geriatric medicine, neurology, psychiatry, psychology, and nephrology. The SveDem research group led by Prof. Maria Eriksdotter is located at the KI Campus in Huddinge.

The PhD researcher will join a multidisciplinary research team of doctors, statisticians, engineers, and basic researcher working to detect factors to prevent dementia, slow cognitive decline in patients with dementia and ensure high quality and equal access to dementia care throughout Sweden.  

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The overall aim of this PhD project is to explore the relationship between kidney disease and dementia, whether kidney disease increases the occurrence and progression for dementia and how dementia influences the occurrence and progression for kidney disease.

This PhD project involves three large Swedish registries:  the Swedish registry of cognitive/dementia disorders (SveDem; www.svedem.se), the Stockholm CREAtinine Measurements (SCREAM) project and the Swedish Renal Register (SRR) (https://www.medscinet.net/snr/). The student is expected to conduct epidemiologic research within dementia and renal epidemiology. You will analyze large and complex data and it is therefore a merit if you have skills in computational statistics and programming. Another merit is knowledge and training in epidemiological theory and methods. The student will have strong support by a team of supervisors with expertise in epidemiology, nephrology, dementia research and in geriatric medicine.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for a motivated applicant with the ability to work productively in a multidisciplinary research team. Preferably, but not necessarily, a candidate holding a degree in epidemiology, public health, medicine, or biostatistics. Experience and knowledge in more than one of these disciplines is a merit. The position requires strong analytical skills and strong writing skills, a good command of statistical software such as Python, R, Stata or SAS is a merit. So is experience in working with register-based research and longitudinal data. The applicant should possess good interpersonal skills, as well as the capacity to work independently, and to reflect critically on scientific output.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
