Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

Professor Petter Höglund leads a translational immunology group with a focus on natural killer (NK) cells, platelets and neutrophils. See https://ki.se/en/medh/petter-hoglund-group for more information. The group is now looking for a PhD student to work on the molecular control of NK cell education.

The work will be conducted at the Center for Hematology and Regenerative medicine (HERM), a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge focusing on translational hematology and immunology. HERM is located in the newly built NEO building and consists of a mix of clinical and preclinical research groups, each with a focus on clinically relevant questions in hematology, stem cell biology and immunology, including basic immunology, immunodeficiency and transfusion immunology.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The aim of the project is to provide advancement in the understanding of NK cell education, defined as the process by which NK cells gain functional competence during maturation. The work follows on a long line of NK cell research in the Höglund group, in which the instructive role of MHC class I molecules on NK cell education has been in focus. In recent work, transcriptional targets have been identified using single cell RNA sequencing and a posttranscriptional regulation has been studied using high resolution confocal imaging. In addition to imaging and expression profiling, laboratory work in the project will include all aspects of an immunology lab, such as molecular biology, cell culture and flow cytometry.
