Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Wengström research group offers a diverse and international research environment where the health of people with cancer is the focus. The group is part of the Division of Nursing, at the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) at KI. One goal of the group is to identify ways in which exercise can help to improve the health of people with cancer before, during and after treatment. We participate in national and international research networks and trials to achieve this goal.

The division of nursing conducts research within care science and education. Our aim is to improve health care for patients and relatives as well as for health care employees. The division’s research program aims to contribute to guidelines and new ways of working in healthcare from the patient's perspective, problems and needs, to ensure patients' health and well-being in every situation. Inviting the patient to work together is one of the cornerstones for achieving safe patient care. The focus of our research is value-based care, and its potential and significance for patients' health.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The doctoral student will be admitted to the Reseach school in health science

In this PhD project, the candidate will investigate the effect, feasibility and cost-effectiveness of an online, exercise program for patients with breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. The program is interprofessional in nature and includes components and professionals from the medical health system as well as community fitness leaders. The study will examine the effect of the Ex-Med cancer exercise pathway and program on physiological (fitness, muscle strength, body composition) and self-reported (physical activity, quality of live and symptoms) outcomes. The PhD project will also help to establish the safety, feasibility, and cost effectiveness of the program.

In addition to completing doctoral student courses at KI and acquiring the required credits, the doctoral student's tasks will include working with patients during exercise sessions, carrying out literature reviews and data analyses. Further, the student will interpret the results and write publications for scientific journals. The PhD student will also present the research results in national and international seminars/conferences and take an active role in experimental design and presentations.
