To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The research group of Professor Anna Wedell is interested in diagnosing, validating and identifying the molecular consequences of inherited metabolic diseases (IEM). Together with the Centre for inherited metabolic diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital, the group aims to improve the current tools used for diagnosis of IEM, increase our knowledge of genotype-phenotype relationships, to understand the biological mechanisms that lead to disease, and eventually to lay the basis for individual treatments strategies.

These goals are achieved by working in close collaboration with the division of molecular metabolism at Karolinska Institutet and the Science for Life laboratory in Solna, combining state-of-the-art basic science with untargeted large data approaches.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

We are looking for a highly motivated person with a background in medicine and IEM, as well as statistics and bioinformatics. The successful applicant will analyse data from massive parallel DNA and RNA sequencing from patients and families with suspected inherited metabolic disease with a special focus on mitochondrial defects. Additionally, he or she will develop untargeted proteomic analysis by mass spectrometry as a tool to diagnose patients with mitochondrial disease, and generally assist in diagnosing and validating genetic abnormalities causing mitochondrial disease. Experience in working with large-scale data sets in combination with clinical information is essential. This project provides the opportunity to participate in a translational project with direct clinical implications.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

A degree within the area of biomedical research is required, and a medical degree is favourable. We are seeking a new group member with a broad range of interests and experience in the following key areas:

1) Curate clinical data, reading and understanding patient records.

2) Analysis of OMICs data (RNA and/or DNA)

3) Molecular Biology/Cell Biology: Knowledge in basic molecular techniques specifically molecular gene cloning, in vitro mRNA synthesis and gene expression assays including PCR, RT-PCR, and qRT- PCR, as well as Western Blot protein analysis.

The applicant will be evaluated based on education and previous experience, relevance for the project, publications and track records, motivation, problem solving skills, and cooperative ability. Personal suitability is also an important criterion.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
