Department of Medicine, Solna

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group
Professor Lars H Lund leads our group and the group consists of multiple PhD students, post-docs and fellows, statisticians and data mangers, and research nurses. We also collaborate with other groups at Karolinska, throughout Sweden, and globally. We are involved in epidemiological, clinical and molecular aspects of heart failure.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
Heart failure affects approximately 2-3% of the adult Western population. It is categorized according to left ventricular ejection fraction as being preserved (HFpEF), moderately reduced (HFmrEF) or reduced (HFrEF). In HFpEF there is no evidence-based treatment reducing morbidity and mortality. To provide novel treatment targets we need to understand underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

The goal of the doctoral project is to characterize HFpEF phenotypes through the adipoinsular axis and tissue saturation and to explore prognostic and regional differences in HFpEF phenotypes. The project includes clinical as well as laboratory work and will generate complex experimental data sets. Analysis requires the student to apply statistical methods including descriptive statistics and regression models added by bioinformatics to explore the HFpEF phenotype. During the doctoral student period, the student may also be allowed to make analyzes in larger epidemiological data sets. The student will interpret and present results in writing in of scientific papers and oral presentations.
