Doctoral (PhD) student position in Immunology

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Martinez-Gonzalez group (https://ki.se/en/mtc/itziar-martinez-gonzalez-project-immunological-memory-of-innate-lymphoid-cells), at the department of Molecular Tumor and Cell biology (MTC) at KI, is interested in studying memory ILC2s in type 2 immune diseases.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

In this project, the incoming doctoral student will develop an in-depth understanding of the role of ILC2s in the initiation and progression of allergic diseases. The student will also become trained on several cutting-edge techniques including single cell multiomics, human sample analysis, mouse models of allergic diseases, imaging and advanced flow cytometry. Specifically, the student will characterise memory ILC2 skin niches, cellular interactions and molecular pathways regulating their function in samples from atopic dermatitis patients. Mechanistic aspects will be validated using skin equivalents and mouse models. The student will also contribute to the general management and dynamics of the laboratory.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. Have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. Have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. Have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

• Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Verification of your documents: Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. (A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

In addition to the above mentioned requirements for the position:

• The candidate must hold a master degree in the field of immunology
• The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communications skills and a proven ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team
• Fluency in English is a requirement

Meritorious for the position:

• Ideally, the candidate would have previous experience in immunological research, mouse handling and computational biology
• It is a merit if the applicant has some experience with flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting as well as human sample management and analysis

Personal skills are highly evaluated.  The student should be able to provide contact details of one or two references.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

• Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.
