To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The Department of Medicine Solna is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet and is organized into several research departments. The Division of Clinical Epidemiology (KEP) is home to seven research groups that conduct research in population-based epidemiology using registry-based health care data, often supplemented with information from medical records, biological samples, and surveys, to address questions aimed at improving patient health care and clinical practice. Projects conducted at KEP usually have a strong clinical anchoring. There are around 50 doctoral students at KEP, with a range of research backgrounds, who meet regularly. Monthly seminars in biostatistics are also offered at the division. The student will be part of the Reproductive Epidemiology Research group at KEP. Our research group includes midwives, doctors in obstetrics and gynecology, pediatricians but also nutritionists, epidemiologists and biostatisticians. Our research is financed by the Swedish Research Council, FORTE, Belmont Forum, NIH, Region Stockholm, Karolinska Institutet and other research funders. Our ambition is to be able to combine the clinical work close to the patient with research and quality work to increase safety during pregnancy, childbirth and the newborn period.
The research project PhD students are expected to take a leading role in the entire research process under the guidance of their PhD supervisors. By participating in study design, data processing and analysis, interpretation and communication of results, taking relevant courses and participating in seminars and journal clubs, the student is expected to complete the doctoral dissertation project and grow into an independent researcher at the end of their studies The student will be a part of a research project that will explore the effect on birth experience and maternal and neonatal outcomes of a midwife continuity of care model on women with psychosocial vulnerabilities.
