To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The successful candidate will join a research group focusing on identification, assessment and management of hazardous substances in the workplace. To address our reserach aims we work with a variety of methods and data sources, ranging from document studies, questionnaire and registry data to field work and laboratory in vitro studies.
We are a dynamic, collaborative, and supportive team at the unit of Integrative Toxicology within the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM), an interdisciplinary research department at Karolinska Institutet. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health.
The doctoral student will work in a project concerning lung effects occupational use of cleaning agents. The candidate is expected to combine several kinds of methods to detail risks for respiratory effects and also connect toxicological knowledge regulatory risk assessment. The main focus will be on experimental work in vitro employing human lung cells. Additionally, the candidate will employ systematic literature searches and work with Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) to map out available data on cleaning agents lung effects and document studies of regulatory risk assessments of cleaning agent ingredients.
Aside from the practical reserach work, the studies also include actively participating in unit and department activities, attending seminars, courses, and conferences. The doctoral student will under supervision, and with time more independently, plan and execute the sub-studies of the PhD project, analyse data, interpret, and present the results as well as write scientific articles.

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:
- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.
The doctoral student will work with systematic literature searches, development of AOP networks, experimental work and document studies of regulatory risk assessments. The ideal candidate has an education within toxicology or similar field. High weight will be given to any documented experience from work with systematic literature reviews, AOPs, cell models, regulatory risk assessment or assessment of mixture effects. Other factors that will be considered are: English language and communication skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) as well as motivation to pursue a PhD, independence and ability to collaborate. Applicants are preferred to be available to start the PhD position as soon as possible.
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
