To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The student will be supervised by Doctor Karin Larsson, researcher in Per-Johan Jakobsson’s research team, which is part of the Department of Medicine, Solna and located at the Centre of molecular Medicine (CMM). The student will be co-supervised by Professor Per-Johan Jakobsson and assoc. professor Karolina Kublickiene, at the Department of Clinical Science Intervention and Technology. The research group of Per-Johan Jakobsson works with inflammation in autoimmune diseases and cancer, the research group of Karolina Kublickiene is focused on cardiovascular health.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The overall purpose of the PhD project is to investigate the influence of anti-inflammatory drugs on tumour targeting therapies, with the aim to improve the patient outcome and to assess their effect on the cardiovascular system. The student will acquire knowledge in tumour biology, cardiovascular biology and in inflammation. The student will be trained in cellular and isolated organ assays, animal experiments and in vitro tumour models. The student will work together with postdocs and other PhD students, learn relevant methods, analyse data, present, and critically discuss results to answer postulated research questions. The student will attend courses, seminars, and international conferences.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities

We are looking for a motivated, curious, and thorough person with good communication skills and an interest in cancer biology, inflammation, and cardiovascular health. A successful candidate can work independently but also function well in a collaborative environment.

The applicants should demonstrate excellent ability to write and speak English. The projects require a sufficient background in molecular biology, biomedicine and/or pharmacology. Previous experience studying/working in a translational research environment is a plus. Documented experience of different molecular biology laboratory techniques and assays is a requirement. Experience with cell organ, culture work and animal models, as well as an understanding of the complexity of translational and interdisciplinary research is meritorious.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

Location

The employment is at the Department of Medicine, Solna. The Department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. This position is located within the research group of Per-Johan Jakobsson at the Reumatology Division. The group is located at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM) at the Karolinska University Hospital area. Due to the complexity of the project, part of the experimental work will be performed at the Cardiorenal laboratory, Karolinska Institutet, NEO, Huddinge.
