Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

Assistant Professor Zhichao Zhou conducts cardiovascular translational research within the larger research group led by Professor John Pernow at the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine Solna. This translational research team located at BioClinicum, Karolinska University Hospital actively collaborates with many excellent cardiovascular research groups. The research team carries out translational research focusing on novel disease mechanisms and treatment of cardiovascular complications in cardio metabolic disorders.

In recent years, we have been studying the role of red blood cells in the development of endothelial dysfunction in diabetes, and we have demonstrated a novel function of red blood cell as a new mediator of diabetes-associated vascular complications (Zhou et al. J Am Coll Cardiol 2018; Zhou et al. Diabetes 2021). The next step of this novel research line is to identify molecular mechanisms and characterize the function of red blood cell-derived factors in the development of endothelial dysfunction in diabetes, and how red blood cells transmit signals to vasculature to regulate endothelial function.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The aim of this project is to characterize the function of red blood cell-derived factors in the development of vascular dysfunction in type 2 diabetes. Studies are designed using a combination of clinically based and molecular mechanistic investigations. Materials from well-characterized patients with type 2 diabetes, rodent diabetic models, gene-modified mouse models and cell models are used. Research projects involve in vitro (including isolation of red blood cells and animal tissues, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, Western blot and qPCR), ex vivo (vessel reactivity assessment with Wire myograph) and in vivo experimental methods (including rat and mouse work). This project has the potential to identify altered red blood cell-derived factors as new mechanisms underlying endothelial injury in type 2 diabetes and open up new potential therapeutic possibilities in patients with type 2 diabetes for the treatment of diabetes-induced vascular complications by specifically targeting red blood cell-derived factors and vascular signalling pathways.

The student will also contribute to the general management and dynamic of the laboratory.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

Follow the instructions on the web page Entry requirements (eligibility) for doctoral education.

*If you claim equivalent knowledge, follow the instructions on the web page Assessing equivalent knowledge for general eligibility for doctoral education.

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Follow the instructions on the web page English language requirements for doctoral education.

Verification of your documents Karolinska Institutet checks the authenticity of your documents. Karolinska Institutet reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent. Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

Applicants who obtained a Master degree within the area of molecular/cell biology, physiology, pharmacology or a related area or are medical students are welcome to apply. Applicants should have a deep interest in medical and biological problems. Previous experience with cell culture, molecular and biochemical techniques as well as animal work is a merit. The candidate should have good social and communication skills as well as good spoken and written English language level, to effectively integrate in the research group.

We welcome a creative, hardworking and enthusiastic team player to this project. The PhD candidate is expected to take part in experimental design, experimentation, presentations, and preparation of publications.
