To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
The research group where the announced position will be placed is headed by Dr. Konstantinos Ampatzis. Research in the Ampatzis Lab regards the plasticity mechanisms employed by the vertebrate nervous system in both health and disease. The lab employs different approaches from systems neuroscience to stem cell research with a particular focus on electrophysiology, anatomy and behavioral studies in adult zebrafish. The lab is located in Biomedicum building at Karolinska Institutet.
An intriguing feature of the nervous system is plasticity, the remarkable lifelong capacity to change and adapt in light of intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli. The doctoral project aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of the neuronal plasticity (mechanisms and structural changes) contribution to neuroprotection and regeneration of spinal networks after injury. Thus, the outlined research can deliver new, essential knowledge regarding the organization and dynamic adaptations of the adult spinal networks. The results are expected to have a substantial impact because the experiments are designed to lay the groundwork for the development of new, targeted treatments for SCI and other spinal neurodegenerative diseases.

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.
Specific duties and qualifications:
Required:
Master of science in biology, biomedicine or equivalent, with a focus on neuroscience.
Animal work certification in accordance with current Swedish and European legislations.
Knowledge of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology and practical experience of whole animal (zebrafish or other fish) experiments, preferentially in vivo studies using methods relevant to the current project, i.e., confocal microscopy, electrophysiology, and behavior.
Proficiency in acquisition and processing behavioral data using commercial behavioral software (e.g.ethovision).
Desirable:
Practical experience of intraperitoneal drug administrations, advanced tissue processing (whole mount immunohistochemistry) and analysis (quantified anatomical approaches) is meriting, as is experience with proliferation/neurogenesis. Further meriting is experience in designing animal behavior experiments preferably in zebrafish. Additional advance knowledge in imaging process and analysis software (e.g. ImageJ, Fiji) is highly meriting.
We are seeking a highly motivated and creative person with proven experience in the field of neuroscience, preferentially in zebrafish (or other fish) model system. The successful applicant is expected to hold the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Good communication skills in both spoken and written English are requisites.
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
