To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics conducts a broad range of biomedical research, consisting of 12 Divisions with a total of ca. 300 employees. Division of Chemistry I hosts the research group of professor Roman Zubarev and two proteomics core facilities. The Division uses mass spectrometry as the main research method, and focuses on chemical proteomics and single cell proteomics. The instrumental park encompasses 10 Orbitrap mass spectrometers, of which 9 are modern and more than half are high-end instruments. The Division hosts over 20 researchers and students, conducting own biomedical and bioanalytical research in synthetic biology and biochemistry, stem cells, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and neurobiology, as well as participating in collaborative studies in autoimmune diseases and a broad range of other topics.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The PhD project relates to development of new technologies for determining the drug target and the site of drug-protein interactions. It is part to the EU Training network ALLODD, aiming to develop new methodologies for identifying allosteric modulators of protein function. Working on the project involves mastering sophisticated analytical instrumentation, such as hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry, as well as the related data processing algorithms, for their creative use and further development.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

In order to participate in the selection for a doctoral position, you must meet the following general (A) and specific (B) eligibility requirements at latest by the application deadline.

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree), or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B) can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education.

Skills and personal qualities

The successful applicant will have a strong academic background in Biology or Analytical chemistry, preferably with experience in such analytical techniques as liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. An experience of dealing with complex analytical instrumentation is a plus. Good mathematical and data analysis skills are required for successful application of data analysis algorithms and evaluation of the obtained results; programming on any computer coding language e.g. in Python or R is a benefit. Good written and spoken English as well as communication skills are absolutely needed.

Terms and conditions

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

According to the conditions of the ALLODD project, you must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent of research experience measured from the date when the you obtained the degree entitling you to embark on a doctorate) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. Also, you shall not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc., but not vacations) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the start of the ALLODD project, which is September 1, 2021.

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.
